The film is based on the novel of the same name by the well-known Bengali author Narayan Gangopadhyaya. In the era of the East India Company, the business community in Calcutta is deeply divided into two groups: The British and the local. In this era of hatred, Harihar Roy (Utpal Dutt) — an affluent businessman — lives peacefully with his wife and daughter. He is one of those who believe in uniting India and creating freedom from British rule. He also has a good relationship with his employees though he treats them like family members. His son, Nabin (Biswajit Chatterjee) and other family members live in harmony unaware that they will face hardships in their future that will divide them forever. One day, Nabin and his mother (Ranjana Ray) see a young lady named Bindu (Naomi Chhapra) standing at their residence. Nabin and Bindu fall in love and their relationship grows stronger. At this point, Harihar Roy calls Nabin back from the Railway Department where he was working as a station master to take over the business. Nabin comes home and gets married to Bindu. However, he is unaware that Harihar Roy had promised his sister-in-law to another man — Mukund (Arif Khan). Mukund marries Bindu’s sister with the help of Harihar Roy without informing her. Nabin and Mukund both think that Harihar Roy would change his mind and cancel the other marriage. But Nabin’s marriage to Bindu is held in a temple while Mukund marries his sister-in-law. After some time, the British make it compulsory to register marriages in Calcutta by applying for a Marriage Certificate with the police. When Nabin’s family finds out about it, they are completely devastated and they start living separately. Later, when Harihar Roy realizes how upset his sister-in-law is over this, he gives her divorce papers which also hurt her deeply. Bindu gets pregnant, but Nabin doesn’t visit her out of anger. Meanwhile, Bindu’s sister dies during childbirth. After some time, Nabin starts to visit Bindu occasionally. One day he goes to see Bindu at 9 o’clock at night after she goes into labour with his child who is born dead. Even though Nabin remains angry with his father, he reconciles with him eventually and takes the responsibility of taking care of his son who suffers from paralysis.
